I can't bring myself to watch Al Gore's documentary, I am afraid I would fall into a deep sleep from which I would never recover. I used to love the Academy Awards. But when it is almost inevitable that they will honor this overblown, Bush-bashing demagogue who has gone off the deep end, I just cannot take it. I didn't watch the Golden Globes this year, either. Normally I would eat that kind of stuff up. But the threat of hearing celebrity after celebrity insult the global war on terror and/or the President just because it is easy and politically correct turns my stomach. I just can't tolerate it. Whatever happened to the Hollywood of WWII? They were patriotic. They were pro-military. They opposed the evil enemy. Now they coddle up to global warming loons and global terrorists on a regular basis. And on those awards shows, no one thanks God any more. They thank their agents and their lawyers and their children's nannies. But the Creator of the universe who gave them their talent isn't even an afterthought. Maybe it's because He doesn't buy into global warming or global terrorism either.

WE SEEM UNWILLING TO FIGHT

I am very encouraged by this. (Hat tip - Instapundit) Overall, it has been very discouraging to see my country not willing to fight a war, not willing to win. Not willing to support the Commander In Chief. Radical Islamofascists want to kill us. And they will do whatever it takes to make that happen. We, on the other hand, don't seem to be willing to do much at all. Not our military, mind you. They are willing to fight and die and do the difficult things. But our media and many of our politicians just want to whine and pretend this deadly menace will somehow go away. Well, it won't. Unless we make it go away. That's what the war in Iraq is all about. Fighting the bad guys and killing them, in their part of the world, so we keep them from hitting us again in our homeland. I've never served in the military. I'm not what you would consider a tough person. But I get this. I get that this is life or death. And we've got to fight them. I only wish we had the will as a nation to do it, and to do it well. I am discouraged because it seems we do not.

WEE Wii WEE all the way...to the grave

My fellow blogger Thirdwavedave got the ball rolling on this story. I'll add to it my own speculation. From what I could tell, the normal DJs who make up KDND's (The End) "Morning Rave" were not on the air this morning. I heard a distinctly different voice at around 8:55 AM. Now, it could be that this 3-person morning team simply had the Martin Luther King day holiday off. But what I think is more likely is that they are either being disciplined by the station, or they are being asked to keep a low profile until this story gets off the front page. That may take a while. I worked in radio and TV for years, and a three-person morning team is a big deal in a market like Sacramento. KDND is spending A LOT of money on it's morning drive time team. And because all of the money is going to pay for talent, I doubt they have their own producers. They probably are their own producers. So decisions about pulling a promotional stunt like the one that caused Jennifer Strange her life may have definitely been ones they were highly involved in. Again, let me stress this is speculation, I don't have any proof. Just my own media experience hunches. I will be very interested to find out whether Lukas, Maney and the female member of the "Morning Rave" (I don't know her name, it seems to change fairly often) will be back tomorrow.

A RELIGIOUS ROCKY

I really enjoyed the sixth film in Sylvester Stallone's Rocky franchise. Sure, parts of Rocky Balboa are cheesy and predictable, but you still come away rooting for the Italian Stallion. And I grew up on Rocky films and have enjoyed each one of them. And the sixth, and presumably last, in the series is better than you would expect, better than Rocky IV or Rocky V were. One thing that caught me pleasantly by surpris: the use of religion to add to the inspirational tone of the film. In one montage scene, Rocky does the sign of the cross. A featured character in the movie, Rocky's old boxing nemesis, Spider Rico, quotes Scripture in the film and is portrayed as wanting to please Jesus with his life. And the evolving love story between Rocky and Marie is very simple and chaste. The film makes it clear the unmarried couple share nothing beyond a kiss. I don't remember these distinctly Christian elements in the earlier Rocky films. But they helped make this one even more memorable for me. It's a fun flick and I highly recommend it.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

HAPPY NEW YEAR from the Media Matters family. At least once a week I find myself making a delivery or picking up a client in the neighborhood where my wife works. So I have developed a romantic little gesture that she loves. We call it the Drive By Kiss. Whenever I am in her neck of the woods, I call her and give her 5 minutes notice. Then I call again when I make it to the parking lot. She meets me out front of her office building, and the makeout session begins. OK, it's not quite that hot and heavy. But it is a nice way to add a little pizazz and romance to your day. And bring a smile to your wife's face. Husbands, if you have the ability to work drive by kisses into your routine, believe me, it pays dividends.

CHRISTMAS IS NO LONGER IN THE CARDS

The sending of Christmas cards must be a lost art. She told me she'd always wanted one. So, like a good husband, I bought it. But it was supposed to be a surprise. I specifically told the operator at People magazine that this was a Christmas gift for my wife. I told her I did not want the subscription to start until after January 1, so the first issue wouldn't arrive before the holiday. Fine, she complied with all of that. What she did, instead, was send an invoice to my home address in an envelope with "THANK YOU FOR SUBSCRIBING TO PEOPLE MAGAZINE" on the envelope in huge letters. Of course my wife, who gets home before I do and checks the mail, saw this and knew immediately that this is what I had gotten her for Christmas. AARGH! I am so ticked at People. What were they thinking? I feel like they owe me a discount for breaking the surprise. My wife is being sweet about it, and I know she'll enjoy the gift. Still, I wanted it to be a surprise and was led to believe that it would be. I guess the moral of this story is never count on a tabloid to keep a secret.

LUKING AT LUKE AND LAURA

I was 14 when Luke originally married Laura on General Hospital. Because I went to school, I didn't see that pop culture event as it happened. I was not amongst the 30 million Americans who tuned in that day in November 1981. So, 25 years later, thanks to the magic of Tivo and cable TV (SoapNet), the Mrs. and I got to view this soap opera phenomenon. And for that reason, it was fun. My pop culture is very important to me. I'm glad I saw it. But I also felt like I was missing something. Years later, I guess it is hard to live up to the hype. Tony Geary, the Emmy Award winning actor, is a charismatic Luke, but he is far from TV handsome. Plus, Genie Francis as Laura is attractive, but she wasn't soap opera sexy. Still, I enjoyed the Liz Taylor cameo, the fight scene between Luke and Scotty, and all of the pomp and circumstance. Today, though, soap operas are more expensively produced and they're all about the hot young actors and actresses. Tony Geary would never be a heartthrob today. And the sets back in 1981 were very minimalistic, with fake backdrops and limited furnishings. Soaps have come along way in these last 25 years. But no one has yet to surpass the hysteria wrought by Luke and Laura.

PLEASE PRAY FOR PARKER

Baby Media Matters has his next appointment with the pediatric neurosurgeon tomorrow. It was a Guys' Night Out. I am convinced that men need other men in their lives, as friends, confidantes, a support group. If more men had solid male friendships, I think there would be less divorce and broken families in this country. Maybe that's why the military is such an appealing career choice for many because it provides a healthy atmosphere for camraderie and male bonding. It took me a number of years to learn this lesson, but now that I have, my friendships with my two best male friends are of the utmost importance to me. So I would highly recommend the Guys Night Out ritual. We enjoyed the movie. It is completely anti-Bond, in that it is like no other James Bond movie I have ever seen. There are really no gadgets, very few babes, and a different, "behind the scenes" storyline. The story is supposed to be how Bond became Bond and his first mission. So there's M, but no Q and no womanizing. But there were some good stunts, especially in the exciting opening sequence. The director did a great job of putting the audience in the stunts, as if we were jumping and climbing with the actors. Daniel Craig, in his first outing as 007, was a decent Bond. I think he will grow in the role. I look forward to the next Bond blockbuster.

THE NATIVITY SCENE IS TO BE SEEN

Does your home have one of these? Then I was aptly reminded by Michelle Malkin that one of our brave soldiers needs some encouragement. You may remember him. Pvt. Sparling was the individual who received vile anti-war mail in the form of a Christmas card. This Christmas season, let's make sure all he gets are words of thanks and encouragement. Just do it. He spoke about how Herod attempted to be the first Grinch who stole Christmas. Threatened by Jesus' birth and the fear that He might really be "the King of the Jews," Herod ordered all baby boys murdered. But he didn't succeed in killing Jesus and thus Christmas came to earth. And there are Grinches that abound in today's day and age who would like to kill Christmas. But we Christians can't let that happen. That's why it's important to say "Merry Christmas" and to read the Gospel accounts of Jesus' birth and to support films like the Nativity Story. Because Christmas is all about Jesus and we can't let the Herods/Grinches of this world win.

THE WRITE STUFF

I've probably written more than 10,000 thank you notes in my life. People say that in the age of cell phones and email, handwritten notes are becoming a thing of the past. I hope not. It's odd enough to some people when they get a personal, handwritten note from me, a man. Men don't write thank you notes, they say. Well, this one does. Always have. It wasn't so much the way I was raised, just something I always enjoyed doing. And not just thank you notes, but notes of encouragement or praise as well. On the average, I craft at least one handwritten note per day. I find it helps me relax, take the focus off myself and think about others. I would highly recommend it. Especially if you are male. Write a thank you note to someone and shock them. In the Bible we are admonished to "encourage one another." A written note is one of the easiest and more personal ways to do just that.

SCOOBY DOO SEIBER

Here is another silly song I sing to my son, to the tune of the theme to the cartoon Scooby Doo.

Parker, Parker Drew
Where are you?

We need some help from you now.

We can count on you
Parker Drew

We know you'll catch that villain.

We can change your poo
Parker Drew

But only when you're chillin'.

Best Christmas Carol. New store designs will continue to use the famous "Finger Licking Good," and "11 Secret Herbs and Spices" as taglines. The Colonel, an icon known around the world, will appear in a red cook's apron, rather than the iconic white suite jacket, but will keep his bow tie, glasses and goatee. The logo will also replace the old one on another KFC icon, its chicken bucket. KFC will also roll out a new restaurant design, advertising, packaging, point-of-sale and uniforms.

Obviously KFC believes this is an important step. Corporations do this sort of thing all the time, and KFC will probably do it again in two years. But does it really help? i could care less what the Coloner is wearing. I'd like to believe logo revising does not make a big difference and that investing all of that money into the communities they reside in would be more beneficial to their bottom line. Maybe I'm wrong. Previous starting QB Jake Plummer has had a disappointing season, throwing more interceptions than touchdown passes. And with the Broncos on a 2-game losing streak, Shanahan decided he needed to shake things up a bit. I agree with his decision and hope it helps to invigorate the offense. Juvan Walker has been the only bright spot in a lackluster offensive season thus far. At 7-4 the Broncos will probably need to win all of their remaining games to secure a playoff spot. Go Denver!

HOLIDAY IN CHAINS

Well, we made it home from Oregon. And as important as saying what you're thankful for is acknowledging who deserves your thanks. So I am grateful to the God of Christianity for the following blessings:

1) My beautiful wife Mrs. Media Matters. For most of my adult life I never imagined I would marry. But the right woman came along and made me a lucky man when she said "yes."

2) Our child, Baby Media Matters. He brings such joy and smiles to my life. I am loving every minute of it, even the feedings and dirty diapers at 3 AM.

3) The Mrs. and I both have our health. Sure, there are a few concerns, but nothing that robs us of our ability to live our daily lives. And we have great health insurance through Stephanie's work, so that is a blessing as well and something we shouldn't take for granted.

4) The Denver Broncos. Even though they lost last weekend they are still having a winning season. Root for them on Thanksgiving day.

5) Our men and women in uniform. The US military is the finest in the world, both in power and in personality. I am thankful for their willingness to be in harm's way every day to protect me and my family and my freedoms. I wish a special Thanksgiving blessing on those serving in the Middle East.

6) My friends -- Nancy Hill, Mr. Howes, the Massagli family and the Kings -- have radically changed me. I am moved by their investment and involvement in my life. I love you guys.

7) The Mrs. and I are both gainfully employed in jobs that we enjoy. And in career fields that are stable. I am thankful for the financial foundation we already have.

8) Chocolate peanut butter ice cream, Reese's peanut butter cups, and any other combination of the two greatest flavors known to man. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth?

9) The rise of the new media, with its conservative bent. Thank God for the Fox News Channel, talk radio and conservative blog sites. It is a true blessing to know that I no longer have to rely on the MSM for my information.

10) A new trend in TV programming that honors the human spirit and promotes hospitality, generosity, community, fellowship, and the list goes on. And the best of the best - Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Deal or No Deal.

OK, that is my list. What are you thankful for?

OFF TO OREGON

The Media Matters family is off to the beautiful state of Oregon for the Thanksgiving holiday. The commercial features a line of dialogue from the film where the actor uses a curse word. My son was in the room when this happened. We were watching the football game on TV. If a TV program uses language that is inappropriate for my family, I can choose not to view that show. But I have no control over when a commercial airs. There's no TV listings for advertisements. In my home, NFL games are family viewing. But swearing is not. And I am upset that the producers of the movie chose to include that line in the commercial. And I that NBC chose to air the commercial. My family desreves better.

TOUGH QUESTIONS

In church today I met a woman who had a relative serving his second tour of duty in Iraq. He and his family were making a great sacrifice for a noble cause. But sometimes I feel like I am the only person who still supports their mission.

I am disturbed by the common assumption that the war in Iraq seems to be going badly. Even the President has recently admitted as such. Of course, the media and the Democrats want the war to go badly, which is unfathomable to me. But even if the war is going poorly for the US, we must still ask ourselves some tough questions. They are not new questions, others have thought of them before me. Yet they ring true to me as the most important questions of our time.

1. Is the US not able to fight and win a war in the age of television?

2. After only three years, when many wars have lasted much longer and the President has repeatedly told us this would be a long struggle, why has the American public tired of supporting this war?

3. While 3,000 deaths is unfortunate, it is relatively small when compared to other wars in our nation's history. So why have the American public, press and the politicans turned so quickly against this war?

These are tough questions. And I fear I will not be pleased with how our nation answers them.

PROBLEMS FOR PRO-LIFERS (LIKE ME)

I am disturbed by this piece from US News & World Report's election guru Michael Barone. In it he offers:

The fact that an abortion ban could not pass muster with the voters of a state like South Dakota should convince clearsighted prolifers that, even if Roe v. Wade were overturned tomorrow, abortion is simply not going to be banned in the United States anytime soon. True, opposition to abortion is very high in a few jurisdictions (Louisiana, Utah, Guam). But it was almost as high in South Dakota, and the ban was overturned. American voters are ready to support many limitations on abortion. But it seems that very large majorities nationally are not willing to approve an outright ban.

I am disturbed because I fear he is right. Why is it that a ban on abortion couldn't pass in conservative South Dakota? Why is it that parental notification laws can't pass in California? A girl has to get permission to get her ears pierced at the mall, but she doesn't have to get permission to abort a baby? Absurd! And morally bankrupt!

The pro-life issues is one of the main reasons I originally became a Republican. But if it continues to disappear as a campaign issue because no one is willing to take a stand against it, where will that force a voter like me? The Republican party needs voters like me and I hope I do not begin to feel abandoned.

READING LIST

A co-worker of mine is approximately 4 months pregnant. For Christmas and her baby shower she is asking for children's books. She wants to develop a top-notch library of books to read to her little one. I think that's a great idea and it got me to thinking about what books I want to read to Parker. I try to read to him every day. Today we read the children's classic "The Little Engine That Could." I think I can, I think I can. Good stuff. Some other children's lit classics I would like to add to Parker's collection include "Green Eggs and Ham," "The Cat in the Hat," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and my all time favorite book from when I was a kid, "Tuck Everlasting." (If you saw the movie, from what I understand, it has little resemblance to the book it was based upon. The book is riveting.) These are just a few of my choices and I hope Parker likes to read even more than I do.

SIDE NOTE: What am I reading now? Hugh Hewitt's "If It's Not Close They Can't Cheat." I know, I am a presidential election behind, as the book was written about the 2004 campaign. But I have sooo many good conservative political books to read that I need to catch up.

OLBERMANN SHOULD BE OUSTED

Why is it that libtards consistently whine about the so-called vicious rhetoric that comes out of the mouth of Rush Limbaugh and the pen of Ann Coulter? After months of bashing Walmart, which makes no sense to me, his office contacts them in hopes of finding a Play Station 3 for his children for Christmas. Walmart, via a clever press release, told him to wait in line like everyone else. Good for them. I love Walmart. I've heard the catchy song on both pop and Christian stations. From England, Bedingfield used to be a worship leader in her home church. The lyrics to her first big hit are very uplifting and encouraging. To me, the message of the song is live your life to the fullest and start today. You're the only person who can make that happen. It's a simple message, but a smart one.

WILL THE AUDIENCE GET LOST?

Last night one of my favorite TV programs, Lost, was not broadcast during the show's regularly scheduled time slot. Instead, it has been put on hiatus for many months to make room for a new Taye Diggs drama on ABC, Day Break. Now, I have no desire to view Day Break, as all I can tell from the promos is it is a vehicle for Mr. Diggs to take his shirt off as may times as possible. But I do miss Lost. From what I can gather, ABC's decision to shelve Lost for a long time is a two-fold approach. It is an expensive program to produce with a large cast and a difficult production schedule. So the hiatus ostensibly buys them more time to meet production deadlines and turn out a quality product.Secondly, it is partly an attempt to avoid showing repeats. Focus groups apparently hate repeats. As do I. Still, I think ABC is taking a big risk. While still popular, Lost has been steadily decreasing in viewership as one of the show's competitors, Criminal Minds on CBS is steadily gaining in the Nielsen ratings. Much of Lost's audience could continue to defect to CBS during the drama's absence. And by the time it comes back in the Spring, Lost may have been forgotten.

LUNGREN AS A LEADER?

Dean Barnett, guest poster on Hugh Hewitt's site wrote about a conference call with Republican leaders. He was impressed with Dan Lungren. As I posted in a comment on that blog, "Dan Lungren is my Congressman in Northern California. As a good conservative Republican, I voted for him. But I have never felt like he was that charismatic or strong in his leadership skills. I will be glad to be proven wrong, though. He ran for governor of California a few years back as well. After three years of marriage, I can honestly admit she has converted me to Broncomania. I even listen to the games on the radio when they are not televised. It has been fun having a favorite team to root for again. It feels like a very American thing to do, not quite patriotic, but civic almost. I've never been to Denver, except for a brief layover in the city's airport. And I live in California and grew up in Oregon. So my only tie to Denver, or even Colorado for that matter, is the Broncos. Yet I feel they are my TEAM! The team didn't play all that well yesterday, but they still managed to beat their divisional rivals, the Oakland Raiders. And a win is a win, so I'll take it. Go Broncos!

MARKETING A MERRY CHRISTMAS

My beautiful bride, Mrs. Media Matters has an intriguing post on how some major retailers are making a change this holiday season. A change for the better. According to the article, Macy's, Kohl's and my personal favorite retailer, Wal-mart, all have plans to return to the use of the word Christmas. Bravo. It's about time. Most Americans celebrate Christmas and those who don't can be adult enough to not be offended by the phrase "Merry Christmas." I used to work retail after college and we were required to write a personal message of thanks on all receipts. I bucked the system in December and always wrote "Merry Christmas" instead of the PC preferred "Seasons Greetings" or "Happy Holidays." I am glad that these three retailers would be willing to do the same. It may be largely a symbolic gesture, but as a conservative Christian who proudly celebrates Christmas, it means a lot to me. I will plan to take my business to Macy's, Kohl's and Wal-mart this Christmas season and give a bah humbug to Best Buy.

REPUBLICANS RUN OUT OF GAS

Gas prices have shot back up in my area, up 15-20 cents from their earlier low of $2.15 a gallon. My analysis was wrong. The Republicans could not overcome the unpopular war in Iraq, scandals and fecklessnes, and the doomsaying of the MSM. Somehow I need to process that anger. So this blog post is an attempt to do that. These are just some of the things I'm angry about.

1. Conservative media led us to believe the night wouldn't be as bad as it turned out to be. Maybe they cheerleaded (if that's a word) too much.

2. Some exit polling, if accurate, seems to indicate that a lot of Evangelical Christians either stayed home and didn't vote, or voted for the Democrats. I do not understand how that can be. God calls us to be in the world, not to ignore it.

3. The many experts who already think they know exactly what the problem was for the Republicans. I think it will take some time to reflect on what went wrong. And so far, no one I've heard has it all right. It wasn't just the war. It wasn't just illegal immigration. It was probably both of those things and more.

4. As much as I love George W. Bush, a part of me is angry, or maybe more disappointed, that he let Donald Rumsfield go. Maybe it was time for a change. I just don't think Rumsfield has gotten the credit he deserves for much that he did right.

5. Why, when it was helping us gain momentum, did the Republicans let John Kerry off the hook for his outrageous comment after only two days? The military is still mad and yet conservative politicians and media spokespeople appeared to let the issue die after Kerry's fake "apology."

6. Yes it does seem the Republicans are feckless much of the time when it comes to standing up to the obstructionist Democrats. Why didn't the Senate push more judges through? Why didn't we fight harder for Social Security reform?

I can feel the anger. So that is enough for now.

SPOKESPERSON STEELE

Now that RNC Chair Ken Mehlman has stepped down, I like Michelle Malkin's idea of replacing him with Michael Steele. It came out while I was in college and I loved it the first time I heard it. Now I hear it on the radio and I am instantaneously in a good mood. I crank up the stereo and start moving to the music. If I am in my car, I sing along at the top of my lungs. I am one of those strange people you see at stoplights who are totally spazzing out to the song. After a terribly depressing night of politics last night, I needed a Billy Ocean pick me up. And I got one tonight. The lyrics are so inane,

Get Outta My Dreams,
Get Into My Car.
Get Outta My Dreams,
Get In the Backseat Baby
Get Into My Car.

But you don't care because the song is so catchy and fun. Only this time, the little one stayed awake for most of the movie. Oh well, he was very well behaved. And it was a rated G movie, so we're safe. We saw "Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause." We enjoyed it, as we have the first two. It was nice that they had all the same cast back again for the third version. The only downside, it is a very short film. Not even 80 minutes in length. It seems obvious they are catering to children with short attention spans and trying to increase the number of showings in your local multiplex. For a feature length film to be that short is a shame. So for that reason alone, I wouldn't recommend the movie. Wait for it to come out on DVD.

Rumor has it that the only Drive-In Theater in Sacramento is about to be decimated in favor of another multiplex. Please say it aint so. I have found that the fear of having Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, or Harry Reid as Senate Majority Leader, has brought me to my knees before God. Seriously. The idea that the Democrats may take over in the middle of the war on terror frightens me. Fear is a big motivator. And I really don't know what to do about this fear, except to blog and to pray. So Senators Santorum, Burns, Talent and others have been in my daily prayers. As have Michael Steele, Mike Bouchard and Bob Corker. And my blogging has increased, too. It's a simple sentence, but one we should say a lot more often. My wife and I got to say it to an appreciative Vietnam Vet last night. He sat at the table across from us at the restaurant, in his wheelchair. We used the sentence as a springboard to a conversation about our appreciation for the sacrifices of the US military. You can bet that when the subject of John Kerry came up, this Vietnam Vet was plenty mad about Kerry's recent comment that American military personnel are dumb. He was furious, as were my wife and I. Our restaurant Vet was a nice man. A hero, too.

HAPPY HALF BIRTHDAY

My son, Parker, is six months old today. Many criticize Clinton as an inconsequential President. I disagree. I would, to some extent, characterize him more as a Pop Culture President. He played the sax on "The Arsenio Hall Show." He answered the boxers vs. briefs question on MTV. And he strung along a host of women -- Lewinsky, Flowers, Broadrick, Willey -- in a playboy like fashion. It was more important to him to be famous and popular than significant and presidential. Nevertheless, he was indeed a consequential President, it's just that all of the consequences, for him and the nation, were negative.

SILLY SONGS FOR SEIBER...revised

It seems one of my more weird parenting talents is the ability to make up silly songs on the spot and sing them to my four month old son. At first, I thought it would be a lot like journaling. I would process my thoughts on paper and it would help me deal with anger or anxiety and the like. But journaling is highly personal, and it is written quickly and in shorthand. And it's meant for your eyes only, or perhaps you'll read it to your therapist some day. In order to journal I need to feel like my writing is safe and private. Blogging is much different. It's much more laborious. You have to worry about accuracy, spelling, grammar. More eyes are intended to see it. And because of all of these demands, it has been difficult to blog as often as I journal. It's hard to find the time. Whereas you don't intend for anyone to read your journal or diary, the very purpose of a blog is to share your thoughts with others and hopefully persuade them. You need an audience. But if no one is reading your blog, or it seems no one is reading your blog, that can produce the very feelings that necessitate that you journal. So it is a vicious cycle. And as a result I have found myself blogging in fits and spurts. Consistency has been difficult. Discouragement creeps in all too often. And sometimes it just feels like I have nothing original to say. And then when I do feel like I have nothing to say it feels frustrating if no one is reading it. So there you have it. My cathartic explanation of how difficult and emotional blogging can be. Having said all that, I really don't know that I have answered the question in my post's title. I guess the answer is still a work in progress.

DRIVE-IN DATES

The Mrs. and I have been enjoying some recent trips to the local Drive-In Theater. Yes, they still have those (only one in the entire Sacramento area, though). It's been a great outlet for entertainment because 1) it's cheaper than paying $10 to visit your local multiplex, 2) you can bring your own goodies so you don't have to get a bank loan to buy popcorn and 3) we can bring our 4-month old son Parker and he falls asleep in the back seat.

Last weekend we saw Invincible, the new Disney underdog sports movie. Disney has dominated this genre of movie the last few years with strong films such as "The Rookie," "Remember the Titans" and "Miracle." "Invincible" is a solid film, starring Mark Wahlberg as a 30 year old bartender who decides to try out for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. Greg Kinnear portrays Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil. It's based on the true story of Vince Papale who played three years for the Eagles in the late 1970s. Both of us enjoyed the film. It's Disney-clean, perfect for the whole family. And Vince's success gives you goose bumps and helps you realize the impossible really is possible sometimes. I am hoping Disney continues to mine this underdog sports hero theme because it keeps working for them.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL WAR

It seems much of the nation doesn't even realize we are at war. The President's poll numbers and support for the Iraq War are low. And much of the country is caught up in left-leaning conspiracy theories about how Bush and his cronies caused the 9/11 attacks. This is all absurd. We need to realize we are fighting a mortal enemy who wants nothing more than to kill as many of us as possible. Not just our soldiers, but our every day citizens on our homeland. Here are ten things you can do to help support the war effort and combat the loony Left.

1. Vote in every election for candidates that will treat the US military with respect and support the efforts of the global war on terror.

2. Pray -- for our Commander in Chief, his Cabinet, our military leaders and specifically, by name, for every US military person you know, especially those on the battlefront in Iraq and Afghanistan.

3. Sign up to sponsor a serviceman or servicewoman at Soldiers Angels. The Mrs. and I have sponsored three brave soldiers thus far, all serving in the Middle East.

4. Get your church to honor our country and military by celebrating every patriotic holiday as a congregation, recognizing military families within the membership, sponsoring a military unit, etc.

5. Buy and proudly display an American flag at your home and/or workplace. Our flag is beautiful and it does inspire patriotism. And we need that.

6. Get your news from sources other than the Mainstream Media. The major networks, with the exception of the Fox News Channel, have displayed a vested interest in seeing the Bush Administration and the US military fail in Iraq and elsewhere. The time has come to rely on blogs and other conservative outlets for news you can trust.

7. Blog your beliefs. We can't afford to keep silent while Islamofascists want to kill us and the media and the Democrats want to help them accomplish their mission. Let your patriotic, pro-military, God-fearing voice be heard or words be read.

8. Thank every US military veteran you meet. A simple "thank you for your service" will more than likely warm their heart and put a smile on their face. And it will remind you of their sacrifices on your behalf, and the sacrifices many are still making today in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.

9. Support your family members in the military. Most of us have a relative, either in our immediate family, or in the extended version, who is currently serving our country. Write them encouraging notes, send them gift baskets and make your support noticeable in tangible ways.

10. Instill within your children respect for and admiration of the US military. Let them know the military is a great career opportunity. And if your son or daughter decides they want to defend our country, respect their wishes. And let them know how proud you are of their choice.

MANNING V. It was a fun game to watch, and the first time in NFL history that two brothers have started opposite each other at quarterback. Personally, I was rooting for Eli to win. Ever since Peyton complained about his offensive line after his lousy game in last year's playoff loss, I've written him off as a whiner. But I have to admit he did have a good game last night. Still, I don't know that he has the chops to win the Big Game. And plus I am getting sick and tired of seeing him in every other commercial on sports programming (Sprint, Directv, GatorAde, etc.). So here's hoping if there is ever a rematch, maybe in a future Super Bowl, that Eli can beat his brother. The world could use a little less Peyton.

Speaking of NBC's Sunday Night Football, I enjoyed the telecast. The pregame and halftime crew were a little rusty. But Al Michaels and John Madden were, as always, in top notch form. Why exactly did ABC decide to boot Monday Night Football to ESPN? Sounds like a lousy move to me. Sure, MNF's ratings dipped a bit. Most shows do in their third decade. Still, it consistently ranked in the top 20. Now you have fewer homes able to tune in because it has been relegated to cable. Sorry, ABC, but that only means it's ratings will dip even further. I don't blame Michaels and Madden for bolting to NBC.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://polimedia.blogspot.com/2006/09/manning-v-manning.html' title='MANNING V. Lots of reasons for the sudden turn in fortune. Some say it is because of the renewed interest in fighting terrorism. Others say it is because the Democrats simply have no credible alternative to offer. I suspect both of these insights are true. But the biggest reason the President and the Republicans will do just fine this November is due to the steady fall of gas prices. I paid $2.69 yesterday in Sacramento. WOOHOO! My budget is loving that. The American people vote with their pocketbook. And falling gas prices are a much needed reminder of how well the overall economy is doing thanks to President Bush's tax cuts. Here's hoping I see $2.55 by election day.

In other news: check out Thirdwavedave for important information on an impending insightful interview. That's good news, though I personally never thought they should have tumbled in the first place. But good things are starting and continuing to happen: 1) the economy is going gangbusters, 2) Zarqawi was murdered, 3) the Iraqi government continues to take shape, 4) the Democrats don't have a coherent opposition to Iraq or anything for that matter, 5) Rove will not be indicted and wasn't even a primary source for Bob Novak, 6) the NY Times is a disgrace and the President called them on it, and the public agrees with him, and the list could go on and on. The bottom line is, we have a good President. Let's be thankful that we do, and let him do his job. Eventually the poll numbers will balance themselves out.

GARAGE SALE NOSTALGIA

The Mrs. and I are having a garage sale tomorrow. It's being held at a friend's house, since we don't have an actual garage. The whole Media Matters family will be there. So if you live in the Sacramento area, come visit us at 9024 Pear Orchard Court in Orangevale from 7 AM to noon on Saturday, July 8, 2006. We'd love for you to come buy your (useful) junk!

We had a garage sale once while I was growing up. We lived in a small town in Oregon, Sweet Home (yes, that's the actual name of the town). We didn't have a garage then, either. It had been converted into a bedroom for my oldest brother. So we had a patio sale. The Sweet Home towners who came to buy our junk had to trod through the wet grass on the side of our house to get to the backyard. But they did! I was only about 10 years old at the time, but was so excited. This one woman bought something for 40 cents. She gave me a dollar. I was so nervous making change for her. I gave her 6 dimes! It was only later that it dawned on me I could have given her 2 quarters and a dime. Oh well, at least my math was correct.

When I was single and moved into my first apartment, I bought all my living room furniture at garage sales. I found this gnarly plaid couch. It was a doozy. I loved it. But when I got married, you can bet my wife made sure it was one of the first things to go. I miss that ugly couch. It had character!

Wish us luck for tomorrow. We're going to need it. We need lots of strangers to come buy our junk.

PARKER'S DAD/PERSONAL ASSISTANT

HI, I’M PARKER.
HELP MY DADDY BE A STAY AT HOME DAD.
Hire him to be your
Personal Assistant!
-Balance your checkbook
-Pay your bills (with your money, of course)
-Write notes & cards
-Type letters & documents
-Create resumes
-Pharmacy runs
-Trips to the post office
-Run to the drycleaners
-Wait for installers
-Deliver packages
-Make bank deposits
-Return DVDs/videos

LET PARKER’S DAD BE YOUR Personal Assistant.

CALL RICH AT 916-296-4647
for availability and hourly rates.

PARKER IS TEACHING ME

I have been on a leave of absence from work for 3 days now, taking care of my newborn son. I am enjoying it immensely, and learning some valuable lessons along the way.

Lesson #1: when preparing to go on an outing, don't put your child in his car seat too soon. My mistake was it was one of the first things I did. Then I packed the diaper bag. Then I got my stuff together. By the time I was actually ready to leave, Parker had been in his car seat for 10 minutes and was screaming bloody murder. Once we got moving in the car, he calmed down and fell asleep. Nevertheless, I won't make that mistake again. Next time, Parker is the last to get ready to go.

Lesson #2: Give your kid what he wants. The doctors and nurses in the hospital where Parker was born stressed that for infants, skin on skin contact with both parents is essential. Especially during feeding time, let your baby's skin touch your skin. Makes sense, that's pretty much how it's done during breast feeding. So today, I took off my shirt while I gave Parker his bottle. (It's not a sight you want to see. Thank God there is no evidence. ) He was sans shirt, too. I put his back up against my chest and rested his head against my arm as I began to feed him. Parker decided he wanted more of a snuggle with daddy, and scooted himself over so that his head was cuddled up against my chest. It was very cute. And it melted daddy's heart. I didn't protest.

AIN'T DIGGIN' THE DIXIE CHICKS

Can't say I'm broken hearted about this news.

Ding-Dong Zarqawi's dead. I had a hard time watching it, sitting still for it because it was so intense. And of course, I knew how it ended. The sadness hit me at the very end and I left the theater with tears strolling down both cheeks. It is a mixture of drama and documentary. There are no big name stars in the film, so you focus on the events and not the famous faces. I would highly recommend that all Americans see this film. This flick paints the patrons of United 93 as the heroes they are. And the terrorists as the evildoers they are. It reminds us that we're all in this global war on terror together. It is important that this film do well at the box office. So go to the theater and consider it an act of patriotism you can enjoy with popcorn.

NO BUSINESS LIKE SNOW BUSINESS

I am thrilled at this news. I hate that.

It has got me to thinking, though, about all of my wife's pregnancy cravings. She hasn't really ventured into anything too weird, like pickles dipped in peanut butter, or stuff like that. And I am grateful for that. I was never looking forward to the midnight runs to the grocery store for sardines and caramel sauce. Her cravings have been standard, if at times, surprising, foods.

At first it was Sunkist. We almost bought stock in the company she was guzzling the soda so fast. Then we learned it contains caffeine, so that craving was nipped in the bud.

Then it ventured into milkshakes. The thick and creamy ones from Jack in the Box were a favorite. Until she learned I could make them at home just as good. She traded back and forth between chocolate, chocolate peanut butter and strawberry banana. All three got a thumbs up in my book. In fact, I think I'll make one as soon as I am finished blogging. (I just answered my initial question.)

Lately it has been peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Maybe that's why kids love them so much when they're growing up. Because that's all their moms ate while they were in utero. I guess we just revert back to the familiar. I ate soooo many peanut butter and jelly samiches as a kid. A certain quantity of peanut butter flows through my veins, I am sure of it.

With only 6 weeks to go, who knows what food it will be next. But I am guessing it will be sane and delicious. And maybe she'll let me have a bite.

PRESIDENT MUST PUNCH BACK

I have always admired Tony Snow. I liked him as the host of Fox News Sunday. I don't get to hear his daily radio show, because I don't believe it airs in the Sacramento area. But I agree with him most of the time. And especially now. As a guest co-host on the Beltway Boys, Tony said that the President must act now to combat his low poll numbers. Immediately. He has to go on the offensive and make his case to the American public. The MSM will not help him accomplish this task. Their goal is to destroy him by harping over Katrina and spying and anything they can use to weaken him. And the President plays it too polite. He just takes it. HE MUST FIGHT BACK. I so wholeheartedly support this President. But I don't support his passivity when it comes to his political enemies. I trust him to go after terrorists, but not after the Democrats and the media. I am at a loss as to how to get him to hear this message. He fought back before. When his poll numbers on Iraq started plummeting in the fall of 2005, he made a series of speeches defending his decisions and calling the Democrats on the carpet. And his support rose significantly. Why does he not continue to do that? He needs to be aggressive and act like the Texan he is.

BEST ACTREESE

For the most part, I did not watch the Oscars last night. That is a first for me. I am usually way into stuff like that. But this year, all of the liberal, loony movies that I have no desire to see kept me away. I did watch one small version of the telecast. I caught the part where Reese Witherspoon won Best Actress for Walk the Line. I am so pleased she won. I wanted Joaquin Phoenix to win, too, but apparently he did not. This was such a great film, my favorite of 2005. And Reese's performance was top-notch, from the singing, to the accent, to the emotion. She played June Carter Cash with such dignity. The biopic treated this woman and her faith and her struggles in life with realism and respect. If you haven't seen it yet, you need to Walk the Line.

HAVE YOU BEEN ON HUGH?

I was on my favorite conservative talk show host, Hugh Hewitt's, radio program Friday. This is the second time I have been a caller on his esteemed program. The first time, I joined in on a discussion about first trimester screening to determine the likelihood that a baby will be born with Downs Syndrome or other genetic abnormalities. I said my wife had just had the testing done, but not so we could abort the baby if there were problems. Only so we could know what we might be up against. This time, I was on the show for a much less serious discussion. As usual, the last hour of Hugh's show on Friday nights is a top ten movie list. This week it was the top ten movies ever about ports or docks or dockworkers. Obviously the reason for the list was because the hot news story this week was the UAE Ports deal. In any case, I called in to recommend that Splash be on the list. This early 80s comedy featured Tom Hanks and John Candy, and if I remember correctly, they owned a seafood distribution business located right at the port. OK, so it was sort of a lame suggestion. But hey, it got me on the show. Hugh and his movie critic, Emmet the Unblinking Eye, didn't really agree with my suggestion, but it did prompt Hugh to think of the dock scenes in Forest Gump when the Tom Hanks character has a shrimping operation. In any case, I got to talk to my idol for a second time. And Splash is a charming movie, even if it does have a lame connection to ports and docks.

PRAYERS NEEDED

As readers of this blog may know, my wife Stephanie is currently 6 months pregnant with our first child. A son, his name is Parker.

In a regular ultrasound appointment the doctor discovered a cyst on our son's brain. He referred us to a specialist.

We had our scheduled appointment with that specialist, a perinatologist, earlier this week. I would characterize most of what we learned as disappointing news, but with the possibility that all might turn out fine. And there is still a lot that remains unknown.

The Dr. did confirm that Parker has a cyst on his brain. The cyst is, to my eye, quite large, compared to the size of his brain. It is not on the skull, but inside on his actual brain.

There is no medical or surgical procedure they can do for Parker until after he is born. Stephanie has been referred to a pediatric neurosurgeon and for an MRI. The MRI will tell us more about where the cyst is located on the brain and what the tissue surrounding the cyst looks like. The neurosurgeon will interpret the results of the MRI for us.

Best case scenario: Parker is born with a cyst on his brain. Damage to him and his brain would be minimal or nonexistent. And after birth they would perform surgery to drain the cyst and that would be successful.

Worst case scenario: the existence of the cyst is the result of, or indication of, some sort of leakage or bleeding on the brain. Which would lead to damaged tissue around the cyst. That damaged tissue would represent permanent brain damage. This is what the MRI is supposed to reveal: if there is any brain damage at this time and if so, to what extent.

Parker seems fine in every other developmental category except for this problem on his brain.

We are, of course, praying that there is no brain damage. I will keep you posted. God bless.
